Kenny Perry sloshed through the water-logged fairways, ducking under an umbrella every chance he got. He also hit plenty of good shots on a miserable day at the TPC Sugarloaf. Coming off a final-round meltdown at The Players Championship, Perry endured a steady - and occasionally driving rain - to claim a share of the first-round lead with a 6-under 66 at the AT&T Classic on Thursday.

For the golfer who thinks a 15-foot putt with 10 grand on the line isn't enough action, how's $200,000 sound? No, not the prize, just the fee to tee off. The World Series of Golf next year in Las Vegas will cost $200,000 to enter and offer a $1.5 million payout for the winner. Organizers think they can find 25 players willing to ante up the $200,000 entry fee.
Green, Singh shoot 66 to lead Irish Open	5/15/2008 1:41 PM
Richard Green birdied three of the last five holes for a 6-under 66 Thursday and a share of the lead after the first round of the Irish Open. Jeev Milka Singh was tied with Green at the Adare Manor. Bradley Dredge (68) birdied two of the last three holes and shared third place with Marcel Siem, Johan Edfors and Michael Lorenzo-Vera. Peter Lawrie birdied four of the last six holes for a 71. Darren Clarke (72) was critical of the course near Limerick.

Darren Clarke is determined to get back onto Europe's Ryder Cup team. Clarke played in the 2006 Ryder Cup just six weeks after his wife, Heather, died of cancer. He won all three of his matches at The K Club, helping Europe keep the trophy by a record-tying 18-1/2 points to 9-1/2 margin over the Americans. Clarke's main target this year is to be on the team again at Valhalla in September. To do that, he is skipping the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in California next month.

Tiger Woods is chipping and putting again, and he hopes to play in the Memorial in two weeks. But even if he can't compete until the U.S. Open, he doesn't expect the same result as his last layoff during a season. Two years ago, Woods didn't play for nine weeks while coping with the death of his father. He returned to competition in the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and missed the cut for the only time in a major. "That was a totally different mental situation than I am now," Woods said Monday.

Don't look for Michelle Wie at this year's Ginn Tribute hosted by Annika Sorenstam. Wie did not seek an exemption into the event she played a year ago, the tournament said. Last May, Wie, citing a wrist injury, withdrew after playing 16 holes of her opening round. Wie said she left because of her wrist and not because she was two-shots shy of the LPGA Tour's "88" rule. That would have banned her from further tour exemptions until the following season for shooting an 88 or higher.
